If dogs aren’t good enough for you, why not get a cucumber or a melon as your best friend? The strictly platonic relationship is ensure by the japanese, of course, with these oddly shaped vegetables and fruits.

It all started with cubic watermelons, then came the pyramid ones, which are a bit harder to shape. But not as hard as this human-faced melon. These are mostly sold as decorations, so probably it is for the better, if we can’t taste them. You can’t have the cake and it eat too.

This uniquely shaped cucumber is just as irresistable. And how are these made? Of course, there’s so much more to this, but basically, “the farmers first make a frame and put a small watermelon in it, just like pouring metal in a mold. The watermelon fills the given shape as it grows.”

These cucumbers - unlike the melon - are for sale on bigger markets throughout Japan.
